provides instruction in traditional Polish folk dance as well as modern contemporary dance styles such as hip hop, disco and jazz. Beginning in September, students perform at various concerts, events and venues throughout the year organized by Sokol Polish Gymnastics Association, Polish Society, as well as City of Winnipeg.
The idea of a dance ensemble was first conceived by members of the Polish Gymnastic Association “Sokol” in Winnipeg a few years after the main organization was founded in 1906. In February of 1914 the dancers had their first known performance, a Mazur, at the Fort Garry Hotel in front of the Winnipeg public. From its humble beginnings, the goal of both the organization and dancers has always been to promote Polish culture in Manitoba.
A century ago in 1914 The Sokol Polish Choir made its first documented public appearance in Winnipeg. Since then, the Ensemble has delighted audiences throughout North America and Europe with its colorful and dynamic performances. Throughout its history the Sokol Ensemble has been made up of a group of dedicated individuals, who are committed to the expression of their rich Polish heritage.
